What's a Kewpie?

Hmmm....Now just what is a Kewpie and why's it called a Kewpie? When I was growing up I had Kewpie Dolls that I would take in the bath, they were the cutest little dolls with their round bodies, chubby face and little curl atop their heads...but I wonder why they are called Kewpies, don't you? Okay, so I am off to the Wikipedia to find out! Back in just a tick!...
So, I found out this...Kewpie dolls and figurines are based on illustrations by Rose O'Neill that appeared in Ladies' Home Journal in 1909. These illustrations, which incorporated words and pictures with the recurring Kewpie characters, are considered to be early versions of the comic strip medium....

...and this is why they are called Kewpies...

Their name, often shortened to "Kewpies", in fact is derived from "Cupid", the Roman god!..

So, there you have it! Of course, now I can see where the name came from!! How could I not have put two and two together!...tee hee...Funny how we go through life not seeing the obvious! I really did love my Kewpies but somehow sadly on life's highway they have become lost and my Kewpies are with me no more...but since they are still about in abundance I see them everywhere and am reminded just how wonderful it was to have a Kewpie!

Why all this talk of Kewpie's?? Well, being a bear creator I thought I might create a beary version of a Kewpie in Micro miniature!...and so that's just what I did...I gave him (yes, I made him a boy) a rotund body a cute expression and a very sweet little Kewpie curl atop his teddy head! While not being exactly like the Kewpie's, he is reminiscent of them enough for me to name him just that, Kewpie! If you'd like to pop on over to his auction, just click here, perhaps he will remind you of your special Kewpie!

Toodles!

Hi Kaz, Your wee Kewpie is darling... he looks just like a Kewpie bear should look like.. you have such a wonderful imagination! Love him... my middle daughter looked like a kewpie when she was little so we used to call her that. She was bald with just a little curl on top of her head!
Hugs, Linda

I remember having a thin plastic type Kewpie...that if you squeezed too hard made crinkly dents...some popped out again..but some could not really be fixed. A modern take on that with these softies is perfect!
